Glossier You | Review + Comparison

Tuesday, 17 April 2018

At the end of last year my very generous friend agreed to send me an enormous Glossier order from the US as we cannot order directly to Australia. I decided to purchase the Glossier You fragrance as my first ever blind purchase based on the inclination that a global beauty brand wouldn't produce a fragrance all that offensive. It was a safe bet. After a few months of use, here's my review and a comparison with Juliette Has A Gun Not a Perfume.

My review comes in the form of a video for ease of access across my platforms. But if you don't care for that format, the gist is that it smells like a straight powdery musk. It has really low silage but pretty average lasting power so I can smell it on my skin hours after spraying but only if I put it to my nose. I really love this fragrance for warm, muggy autumn and spring days because the musky powdery combination makes you feel fresh and clean when wearing it. I can also definitely understand why Glossier would have produced this kind of scent as opposed to a generic fruity floral because this one fits their "cool girl" aesthetic a lot more.

Now on to the comparison! According to Fragrantica users, Glossier You and Juliette Has a Gun Not A Perfume have similar scent profiles probably due to their shared muskiness. What makes Not A Perfume unique, though, is that it's only supposed to contain one ingredient: ambroxan. This ingredient is most often used to replace grey musk but in this perfume is supposed to be able to adapt to your natural body chemistry to give you an individual scent. Additionally, Juliette Has a Gun claims this perfume is great for layering as the single ingredient works to enhance the key ingredients of any other fragrance you spray with it.

On initial spray, Not A Perfume is a much sharper scent than You though it has a similar musky kick. As it dries down, the scent becomes more mellow but maintains the clean warmth it developed in the beginning. As opposed to a powdery musk, Not A Perfume is definitely an amber musk with a similar cleanness but much more warmth and a rounded aspect to it.

Whereas with Glossier You, the first spray is light and clean and slowly the powderiness begins to develop and emerge from underneath the first notes. One of the main notes is iris and that definitely takes over when you first spray the fragrance but dissipates as the musk and powder come through. Glossier describes their fragrance as sparkling and creamy and I would have to agree.

Though both fragrances have a similar musky cleanness to them, I would be more inclined to compare Not A Perfume to a fresh glass of dark liquor and You is more akin to fresh cream. Both enticing but for quite different reasons! Not A Perfume is definitely more sophisticated and is likely to be preferred by more mature noses and for nighttime use as opposed to You which I would recommend for more casual occasions.

So there you have it! A review and a comparison of Glossier's debut fragrance, You. Please let me know if you've tried this one and whether you have an opinion on its comparison to Juliette Has a Gun Not A Perfume. Also feel free to recommend any other fragrances for future reviews and comparisons!

xx Julia
