the Basics | Eyeliner

Sunday, 28 December 2014

Eyeliner: probably one of the first things you picked up in your teenage years to let the world know you didn't care anymore. If you had a childhood anything like mine, there are plenty racoon-eyed photos to remind you of those rebel days. Perhaps now you're looking for something more sophisticated which draws delicate attention to your eyes or an easy way to play with colour. Either way, you've come to the right place.

Holiday Makeup Picks

Tuesday, 23 December 2014

Holiday season = party season. This is my favourite time of year to get all dolled up for many festive parties and get togethers. When, like me, you don't get a lot of opportunity to wear a lot of makeup, this is the time to go big or go home. Here are my recommendations for what to wear makeup-wise during this cheery and party-licious season.

the Basics | Eyebrows

Sunday, 21 December 2014

Eyebrows are one of those things that people don't worry about until someone draws your attention to them. I was that person who wondered why anyone had time to fill in their brows until one day I did it and I've never looked back. Just in case you're still in the wondering, questioning stage, here are some tips for eyebrows that just might drag you onto the bandwagon.

Trending | Tropical Prints

Thursday, 18 December 2014

I'm not one to keep ahead of or even on top of fashion trends. I find trends are so often too fleeting or ill suited to my style and wardrobe that it's difficult to work them in easily. Recently, though a serious print trend has hit the fashion world and I am all over it: tropical prints. Whether their palm fronds, birds of paradise, or pineapples, I will wear them printed across pants, dresses, swimsuits, you name it.

Changing Your Mind

Tuesday, 16 December 2014

When you first try a product, it's pretty easy to decide whether you like it or not. And more often than not, if you don't like it, it gets put in a drawer and forgotten about forever. Unfortunately, I'm not made of money so it gets pretty disappointing when a product I've paid for doesn't work for me. Instead, I play around with it, try different techniques, uses, applications, and see if I can garner something out of this product. Sometimes, this process can even change my mind.

the Basics | Blush

Sunday, 14 December 2014

Blush is the only colour product in your line up of base products and that makes it important. Blush can add a flush, a rosy glow, or a bold pop of colour to your cheeks and breathe life into your face. Most underestimate the fun you can have experimenting the colours, textures, and finishes of blushes.

Top Five Eye Brushes

Thursday, 11 December 2014

I don't talk about makeup tools nearly enough here. For the amount of emphasis we put on great makeup, it's really only half the battle to achieving a beautiful finish. If you can't apply it well, there's no use using fantastic products! To help you build up your artillery, I've compiled a list of my top five eye brushes for perfect eyeshadow application.

Vampy Holiday Lips

Tuesday, 9 December 2014

You hear it all the time in the beauty community: you can't wait until a season starts so you can start wearing certain colours again. As though there's a set of shades and textures assigned to each season, like dressing for the weather. For a little while, I thought I agreed, but then I saw some ladies rocking a killer dark lip and I didn't want to wait until winter!

the Basics | Concealer and Corrector

Sunday, 7 December 2014

You can probably find concealer in almost everyone's makeup bag. It's absolutely everyone's friend whether you want to cover redness, blemishes, dark circles, anything to leave your skin looking smooth and even. If you've never delved into the world of makeup photoshop, concealers and correctors are here in a range of colours to make you feel like the very best you can be.

Review | Origins GinZing Energy-boosting Moisturiser

Thursday, 4 December 2014

Skincare is one of those things I like to rotate with the seasons to make sure my skin is getting all the hydration and nutrients that it needs. As summer starts to warm up, I've swapped over to some lighter products including the much spoken about Origins GinZing Energy-boosting Moisturiser. After using it for a few weeks, I thought I'd add my voice to the rabble and share a review.

Tag | 20 Facts

Tuesday, 2 December 2014

I was tagged by Victoria from Lipstick and Lightplay to do the 20 Facts Tag. It's a very straight-forward tag where you list twenty facts about yourself and then tag twenty people! I think it's a nice way to get to know bloggers a little bit better and hopefully you enjoy finding out some things about me!

the Basics | Contouring

Sunday, 30 November 2014

Since the rise of Kim K, everyone has been searching for the way to achieve a perfectly contoured look. Chiseled cheekbones and jaw line with an all over ethereal glow, it's one of the most sort after looks of the moment. But if you've never tried it before, here are some of the basics of how to contour.

November Favourites

Thursday, 27 November 2014

After a bit of a Negative Nancy post on Tuesday it's nice to regain some positivity with my November favourites. This month is exam month for me at university so I haven't been mixing it up too much beauty wise. But I have compiled some beauty and non-beauty products that I've been using a lot of this past month that I want to share with you.

Disappointing Products

Tuesday, 25 November 2014

No one really likes making these kinds of posts but when you have a bad experience with a product, it can be valuable to share that. The usual disclaimer applies, though: this is just the experience I had with these products and that should in no way reflect on your experience. Take everything you read with a grain of salt and remember I'm not trying to bash, just trying to share.

the Basics | Foundation

Sunday, 23 November 2014

When you're just starting out with beauty or dipping your toe into the online beauty community, the amount of products and information can seem overwhelming. It's difficult to find just the basics of what terms mean and how to use different products. I've been there, I completely understand. So, here I am bringing you the simplest explanations of the very basics in a new series. Every Sunday I'll tackle a different makeup field but please feel free to request something you're trying to figure out. This week, we're starting at the bottom: foundations.

November Empties

Thursday, 20 November 2014

I haven't left nearly the same amount of time since my last empties as I did before so I don't have a mountain to show you this time around. I have used up a bit though so I'll show you what I have got and what I thought of each of the empty products.

Face of the Day | A look fit for the screen

Tuesday, 18 November 2014

I am not a makeup artist. I am not studying it and I have no intention to pursue a career in makeup artistry. I adore makeup and talk about it all the time but I almost exclusively apply it to myself. When I get an opportunity to pretend for a bit, though, I really enjoy it and yesterday my really good friend, Julia, asked me to do her makeup for a screen test (wish her luck!) so I was more than happy to oblige. I thought I'd walk you through what products I used and how I achieved this look!

Trending | 90s Nude Lip

Sunday, 16 November 2014

I know that I am well behind on this 90s nude lip trend but as it doesn't seem to be going away any time soon, I thought I would bring you my top picks for that brown-pink combo with a bit of a summer twist. They're all drugstore (and all Revlon!) so they're easily available and won't break the bank!

Review | Clear Scalp & Hair Beauty Therapy Total Nourishing Care Shampoo & Conditioner

Thursday, 13 November 2014

I'm someone who works their way through hair products like you wouldn't imagine. I have dry, super curly hair and an itchy dry scalp that I can never seem to get away from so I'm constantly on the search for something to give me the healthy hair and scalp that I crave. I recently saw this duo in the supermarket and, for the price, I thought it was worth a go. After using the products for a few weeks, here are my thoughts.

First Impressions | Origins Drink Up Intensive

Tuesday, 11 November 2014

After running out of all my skincare all at once, I decided to pick up some products I hadn't tried before to see how they would work with my skin. A product I've heard a lot about in the beauty community is the Origins Drink Up Intensive mask and, after giving it a sniff, I decided to bring it home with me. With the success of the Drink Up 10 minute mask, Origins released this overnight treatment for a more intense punch of hydration. After giving it a few tries, I thought I'd share with you how it's been working for my skin.

Current Lip Combo Love

Sunday, 9 November 2014

I think we all love mixing and matching our lip products to find the perfect layering combination. I've been on the hunt recently for something to keep me feeling fresh and fierce throughout the springtime and I think I've finally got it.

Project Pan

Thursday, 6 November 2014

A few weeks ago I wrote a post about how I budget my beauty purchases. After writing that post and two months in a row of heavy duty beauty buying, I have to be honest with myself and recognise that my spending has gotten a bit out of control. So, I'm here setting myself a Project Pan challenge to get a handle of my collection and re-evaluate my buying.

A New Frontier

Tuesday, 4 November 2014

We did it! I challenged myself to blog every day in October in an attempt to boost my motivation and creativity after becoming dissatisfied with my blog's quality and it happened! I want to thank everyone who has been keeping up with my posts and those that have found me throughout the last month, I hope you stick around! Now, heading into the future, I have some plans and wanted to start the discussion with you because my blog is a place for you and me to share.

the Makeup Addict Tag

Friday, 31 October 2014

About this time last month I was scrolling through Bloglovin' and came across Kat's Makeup Addict Tag. I'm always a fan of a good tag (even if no one tags me) so I thought this would be a good way to end my blogging everyday in October adventure! As though you haven't already discovered my makeup obsession this month, here are some questions to seal the deal.

October Beauty Favourites

Thursday, 30 October 2014

The end of the year is fast approaching as another month passes us by! This October has been particularly busy as I blogged everyday of the month. I've really enjoyed the challenge and hope you have enjoyed what I've been posting! Anyway, here are the beauty products I've been gravitating towards throughout the month.

Affordable Makeup Essentials

Wednesday, 29 October 2014

When you embark on your interest in makeup and beauty generally, it can be overwhelming walking into the drugstore or department store and having absolutely no idea what things are, how to use them, which ones are worth your money. This can be discouraging and time-consuming but with the growing beauty blogging and vlogging community, it's become much easier to gain knowledge and skills from others who have been where you are now. To add my two cents to the discussion, I've compiled my list of recommended affordable makeup essentials as a starting off point for anyone who's unsure or just interested!

Vegan and Cruelty Free Brands

Tuesday, 28 October 2014

As consumers become more aware and critical of the products they consume, brands are being forced to re-evaluate their practises for more ethical and sustainable methods. If products are sustainably sourced, vegan, and/or cruelty free it increases my interest in that brand and, in turn, the likelihood of my purchasing from and recommending them in future. If you're similarly minded, here's a list of some of my favourite vegan and cruelty free brands to check out.

Tips for Large Pores

Monday, 27 October 2014

One of the major skincare concerns people commonly share is enlarged and noticeable pores. They can cause your skin and makeup to look uneven and are often genetically inherited. There are many treatments available to treat this concern but if you don't have big bucks in the bank, here are some of my tips for minimising the appearance of pores.

Tips for Using Colour

Friday, 24 October 2014

It's tricky using colour in your makeup routine if you're unfamiliar with the territory and just don't want to feel like a clown. I'm someone who loves using a bit of colour to brighten up an eye look and make a regular day feel that bit more special. Or on a night out when I want to stand apart from the crowd and do something particularly daring, colour is a great technique to use. So, if you're looking to incorporate some colour into your makeup routine, here are some of my top tips.

Recent Purchases | October

Thursday, 23 October 2014

I've been doing quite a bit of shopping recently to freshen up my makeup collection and prepare myself for summer. That being said, there have also been quite a few new collection releases from some wonderful brands that I simply could not stop myself from dabbling in. So, if you're interested in seeing what has caught my eye recently just keep reading!

Top 3 Spring Scents

Wednesday, 22 October 2014

Spring is such a wonderful time when the sun starts warming up the earth and the air, flowers start blooming, and it's like the world wakes up again. After the warm, musky scents of winter, I like bringing out lighter, fruitier scents to welcome in a new season. Here are the three I've been reaching for the most recently and remind me of spring.

Everyday Eye | three

Tuesday, 21 October 2014

The third instalment in my Everyday Eye series is an eye look that I think I'm going to be wearing almost non-stop this summer. It's light and easy and gives just enough brightness to my eyes for my liking. The champagne-bronze tones would also suit a blue-eyed person quite nicely but I still like the look on my brown eyes!

My Handbag Stash

Monday, 20 October 2014

Our handbags: a treasure trove of everything we could possibly imagine needing whether we're having a good or bad day. Also, sometimes, a dumping ground for those things we've forgotten about but have now been carrying around unnecessarily for about three months. We've all been there and today I'm going to show you what has worked its way into my handbag to build my handbag stash.

Top Affordable Lipsticks

Friday, 17 October 2014

I recently made a post about my Top Affordable Lipglosses (here) and I thought I'd follow it up with some of my favourite affordable lipsticks. It can be pretty tricky to find the best formulas when the drugstore has such an array of brands, finishes, and colours so I've attempted to narrow it down to the best of the best.

How I Budget

Thursday, 16 October 2014

Now, it probably isn't any surprise at all that I am rather obsessed with beauty products. I'm also probably no different from other beauty bloggers in that I'm constantly craving new releases and the most recent recommendations from my favourite bloggers. This can often make it really hard to keep track of what I'm buying and how much I'm spending each month on beauty products alone. At the beginning of this year I decided that this had become a bit of a problem that I wanted to address. I sat myself down and began writing out a beauty budget. I thought I'd share that process with you in the hopes that it helps you get control over your beauty spending, as well.

Tips for Hooded Eyes

Wednesday, 15 October 2014

I, like you, am a hooded eye girl and am constantly struggling to achieve the eye looks that brighten and lift or at least have a semblance of the looks non-hooded eye girls can pull off. So, in an attempt to make your struggle that little bit easier or to open a dialogue where we can discuss the best methods, I'm sharing with you my tips and tricks for how to wear eye makeup on hooded eyes.

Brand Overview | the Body Shop

Tuesday, 14 October 2014

The Body Shop has been grabbing a lot of my attention lately with some rave reviews, product launches, and a price drop earlier this year. They have such a wider arrange of products and all sorts of yummy scent that have gotten me truly hooked. I'd thought I'd do a bit of an overview of some of the products that have really stood out to me from their range so far.

Beauty Chat | Magazines

Monday, 13 October 2014

I recently read an article from Hayley of London Beauty Queen about her experience with magazines and it got me thinking about the place of glossies in this ever more digital age. What exactly is the appeal of magazines and have they been replaced by the growing blogging community?

Tips for Using Up Samples

Friday, 10 October 2014

If you're an avid beauty lover, then you probably have a draw packed with all sorts of samples and you've probably forgotten where you got half of them. It's always tricky remembering to use them up when most of them only contain one or two uses. They can accumulate, though, and you never know when you're holding on to a product sample that you could fall in love with instantly. Today I have a few tips that I keep in mind to help me wade through samples and make sure I use them up in good time.

How to Make Your Tan Last Longer

Thursday, 9 October 2014

Springtime means sun and sun makes everyone start thinking about summer. T-shirts, short skirts, and swimsuits are coming! And that means it's time to start working on your tan again. But there's no reason to go through all that effort of fake tanning if it's not going to last. Here are my top tips for prolonging the wear of your tan throughout the sunny months.

Bedside Table Essentials

Wednesday, 8 October 2014

I don't know about you, but I spend a whole lot of time lying around in bed. It's just the perfect place to watch YouTube videos, read, or perhaps do some uni work. Laying about in bed, though, means I like having all the essentials within arms reach to minimise unnecessary movement. I keep my bedside table stocked with the usual tissues, bookmarks, and a few other bits.

Tips for Shiny, Healthy Hair

Tuesday, 7 October 2014

Nobody likes skipping around with dull, dark hair flowing out behind them; it just doesn't suit the image of easy, breezy that we're all looking for when the weather starts to warm up. I find, especially with my super curly, dehydrated hair, I'm always looking for ways to make my hair more shiny, bouncy, and healthy. Here are some of my top tips for achieving the same thing with your hair.

What's in my Travel Makeup Bag?

Friday, 3 October 2014

This week I am very excited to be travelling to Brisbane for the Festival of Australian Student Theatre. Not only have I never been to FAST before, I've also never been to Queensland and it's scheduled to be a beautiful week! So, to get myself a bit more psyched up for the trip I thought I'd show you the makeup products I'm planning on packing with me.

September Empties

Thursday, 2 October 2014

That horrible moment when you realise you haven't done an empties post since July! Man, do I have a lot of stuff to show you. I've been doing my best recently to use up more products and not consume more than I can actually use. I can't say it's going too well right now but I'm hopeful of developing the habit so it won't be so difficult in the future.

New Challenges Abound

Wednesday, 1 October 2014

Things are changing here on Miss Julziez! Over the last few weeks I've been a tad dissatisfied with the content I've been creating and the way the blog in general has been heading. I think now is the time to change things up a bit as I've been writing Miss Julziez for nearly two years. There are many blogs out there that I'm an avid reader of because they push the boundaries of the medium and are so creative with their posts. I want to create a fun, exciting environment where my readers can enjoy my content as much as I enjoy that of those I admire.

September Beauty Favourites

Friday, 26 September 2014

September has been a bit of a funny month: the weather in Sydney is all over the place and making it very difficult to figure out which season to be dressing for. Otherwise, it's been a nice mix of rediscovering old loves and finding new ones entirely.

IMATS Haul | 2014

Wednesday, 24 September 2014

Last Saturday I headed over to the Royal Hall of Industries for the International Makeup Artist Trade Show 2014. If you saw my wish list post last week then you know I was very excited to do some shopping and have a great time. This year I had a much more pleasant experience and I think that was entirely due to the fact that I scheduled watching some of the presentations into my day. I got to see Jos Brands present on Kryolan Professional Makeup and Eliza Campagna speak about Ben Nye. I also stuck around for the Battle of the Brushes Award Show later in the day. Breaking up my shopping with these really informative demonstrations added an extra dimension to the show that I didn't allow myself last year. If you're planning on going to IMATS in the future, I definitely recommend taking the time to sit down and learn some tricks or just watch some talented people at work!

IMATS Wishlist | 2014

Friday, 19 September 2014

Every year in September the International Makeup Artist Trade Show comes to Sydney and showers us with discounted cosmetics, makeup demonstrations, and competitions. This year, just like that, I'm very excited to be attending and have compiled a bit of a wishlist to hit while I'm there for the day.

Winter to Spring Transitional Products

Wednesday, 17 September 2014

It's the time of year again when seasons change: the sun comes out, the legs come out, and we're ready to mix up our beauty routines from that winter slump we got into. Here are my favourite products to make that in that in-between time transitioning from winter to spring that little bit easier.

Pastel Polishes for Spring

Wednesday, 10 September 2014

Spring is the perfect time to bring out the pretty pastel polishes to match the lace and floral numbers I've been waiting all winter to wear. Here are some of my favourite colours for this time of year when the sun starts peaking through the clouds and everything gets a little bit warmer.

Top 5 Affordable Lip Glosses

Friday, 29 August 2014

As the weather starts to warm and we move into the summer months in the southern hemisphere, I like to lighten my makeup up a bit, starting with my lip products. Lip gloss is just such an easy product to sweep on and brighten up a whole look. They add colour and shine that I think suits summer days perfectly. To get that easy, breezy lip gloss feeling without a massive price tag, here's a list of my top 5 favourite affordable lip glosses.
